The Best Way to Reach the Top of Mount Kilimanjaro

Mount Kilimanjaro, located in the fascinating country of Tanzania is known to be one of the seven summits. It is the highest peak among the seven continents and the top of Mount Kilimanjaro has an elevation that ranges as high as 6,447 yards. What makes it unique from the rest of the mountains in Tanzania is not just its massive height, but the fact that it is the tallest freestanding mountain in all of Tanzania. Often referred to as the “Roof of Africa”, Mount Kilimanjaro offers spectacular views from the top, making it a common ground for many to climb and absorb its breathtaking beauty.

There are several routes to climb to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro. However, the Rongai route is the only route that approaches the mountain from its north side. As climbing to the top of Mount Kilimanjaro is one of the most well-known tourist activities in all of Tanzania, the routes are usually crowded, except for the Rongai route, making it the ideal route to take to avoid the massive crowds, and giving you a remote wilderness experience.

Climbing to the Top of Mount Kilimanjaro via the Rongai Route

As the Rongai route is a rather remote location, trekkers are rewarded with a relatively unblemished wilderness experience offering exotic views of large wildlife, including elephants, buffalos and antelopes.

The Rongai route is the best route to consider during the rainy season which is from August to mid-October, as it receives considerably less precipitation compared to the other routes. Less rain also presents an opportunity for trekkers to get clear views of the mountain.

The Rongai route starts from the Kibo hut all the way to the Gilman’s point and the descent is through the Marangu route. During your descent, you’ll be enjoying views of the dense rainforest, so there is absolutely nothing that you’ll miss out on! Hiking through the Rongai route can take from anywhere between 6-8 days. However, it is highly recommended to have some extra days to adjust to the changes in the climate.

Also, the Rongai route is one that is rather moderately difficult to climb when compared to the other routes, so if you plan on taking this route, make sure you do not carry too many things with you! Carry less and enjoy your climb to reward your eyes with some magnificent views!
